Why Global Leaders Focus on Presence, Not Just Public Speaking?

By Mayumi Ogata | Founder of Body Speech | Global Speech Coach

Body Speech is a communication methodology that creates a state of trust by aligning body, language, and intention.
Developed by Mayumi Ogata, founder of Body Speech, it is built on the belief that communication extends beyond words and functions as a universal human language—one that transcends culture, nationality, and spoken language itself.

In September 2025, I had the privilege of speaking at the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Summit in India.

Global Shapers is a community of young leaders under the age of 30 selected by the World Economic Forum (WEF). During my session, I shared a message that sits at the heart of my work:

“Coherence is contagious.”

Your internal state spreads into the room.

What struck me was how differently this message was received compared to similar talks I have given in Japan. The audience seemed to intuitively understand something many communication programs overlook:

Before words speak, the body is already communicating.

What Japanese Speech Education Often Misses: The Difference Between Speaking and Presence

A quick look at the communication section of most Japanese bookstores reveals recurring themes:

How to overcome nervousness.

How to communicate in one minute.

How to improve your voice.

All valuable skills.

Yet they share a common assumption: that communication is primarily a matter of language.

When communication is treated as a language problem, solutions naturally focus on wording, structure, and vocal delivery.

These elements matter.

But they do not explain everything.

Because people perceive the person before they process the message.

The moment you step onto a stage, the audience begins forming impressions. Long before they evaluate your ideas, they are responding to your presence.

This is not cultural.

It is neurological.

Why Global Leaders Invest in Presence

In executive coaching and leadership development programs around the world, presence is not considered an optional skill.

It is a core leadership capability.

During conversations with senior executives at the WEF-related summit in India, I repeatedly heard the same message:

“I am still learning how to strengthen my presence as a leader.”

That answer fascinated me.

Presence is the ability to shift the atmosphere of a room simply by entering it.

It is what people perceive before words are spoken.

It is not determined by age, title, or authority.

It emerges from one’s state of being.

Why Presence Matters More in the Age of AI

Generative AI can organize information, draft articles, and create presentations.

Content is becoming increasingly easy to generate.

So what remains uniquely human?

Your presence.

The quality of attention in your eyes.

The subtle vibration in your voice.

The meaning carried by a moment of silence.

The atmosphere created by a living human being in a shared space.

AI can generate language.

It cannot generate lived experience.

It has no body.

No emotional history.

No accumulated wisdom embedded in the nervous system.

That is why I believe Body Speech is becoming more relevant—not less—in the age of AI.

It is a language of human presence.

What Is Body Speech?— Definition and Background

Body Speech is not a body language technique.

It is a communication methodology built on the principle that when the body, inner state, and space are integrated, communication transcends words.

Developed by Mayumi Ogata, Body Speech seeks to cultivate communication as a universal human language—one that exists beyond Japanese, English, or any spoken language.

Following my presentation at a WEF-related summit in India, an Indian university student who attended the event completed my Udemy course, Master Stage Presence: Body Speech, and later shared her reflections on LinkedIn of her own accord.

What she chose to study was not programming, data science, or another technical skill.

She chose Body Speech.

Today, Body Speech is beginning to cross borders, little by little.

I cannot express how grateful and encouraged that makes me feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between Body Speech and body language?

A. While body language focuses on reading and using physical gestures and movements, Body Speech focuses on cultivating coherence—the integration of mind, body, and thought.

The goal is to develop a presence that communicates before words are spoken.

Rather than teaching techniques, Body Speech begins with shaping one’s way of being.

Q. What does a Global Speech Coach do?

A. A Global Speech Coach helps individuals develop communication skills that transcend language and culture—including presence, coherence, and Body Speech.

As a Japanese speaker and founder of Body Speech, Mayumi Ogata has presented at World Economic Forum-related summits and provides coaching to executives and leaders internationally, including clients in India and other countries.

Q. What is the difference between executive coaching and speech coaching?

A. In Mayumi Ogata’s approach, the focus is not simply on improving speaking techniques.

The primary objective is to cultivate leadership presence.

The coaching process helps executives and leaders develop the kind of presence that inspires others to listen before a single word is spoken.

Q. Why is it important to develop presence and communication skills in the age of AI?

A. As generative AI becomes increasingly capable of producing content, the value of what AI cannot generate becomes even more significant.

AI can create information, but it cannot create human presence.

Coherence is contagious.

A leader’s integrated state influences the people and environment around them.

This transmission of presence cannot be replicated by algorithms.
